Wayne Rainey's Africa at Bentley

Press Release

Wayne Rainey's 'Africa' Series Showing at
Bentley Gallery

PHOENIX, Arizona—January 23, 2002—In the summer of 2001, Photographer Wayne Rainey followed the path of adventure, and a solar eclipse through the southern parts of Africa, documenting the people and events in their everyday lives.

Leaving behind the usual safari assortment of long lenses and traditional cameras, Rainey embarked on a photographic journey with a pinhole camera and a Chinese plastic medium-format camera, better known as a ‘Holga’. The result is a stunning collection of Black and White imagery that is currently on display at the prestigious Bentley Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. In his article for the Arizona Republic, John Villani describes Wayne's adventure, traveling by bus, canoe, and land rover, zigzagging the region, living out of a tent, and carefully selecting his subjects to conserve precious film.

The January issue of Art News describes the thriving gallery scene in Phoenix and Scottsdale and features as the main image a selection of Wayne's photography from this series.

"Looking at Wayne Rainey's new photographs is like waking from a half-remembered dream. Blurred, stained and minimal...his jewel like dark sketches of his African Voyage remains on the fringes of consciousness like some newly unearthed shadowy artifacts." - Keith Carter

The show runs through Feb 8 with a grand opening on Thursday Jan the 9th, 2003.
