Brian Belefant
Before becoming a photographer, Brian Belefant was Senior Vice
President/Creative Director at BBDO, where he was responsible for
creating national and international advertising campaigns for Pepsi,
Pizza Hut, Frito-Lay, Visa, and Skippy. In that capacity, he began to
ponder the implication of the global brand, and he realized that as
companies get bigger, they tend to disassociate themselves from the
very heritage that drew people to them in the first place. Starbucks
is no longer about Seattle; Coca-Cola is no longer connected to
Atlanta; and Toyota doesn’t want people to associate it with Japan—
going so far as to name a truck after a city in the Pacific Northwest.

Belefant started exploring the notion artistically when he began
photographing through liquids relevant to the subject being
photographed. He shot Portugal through 20-year-old tawny port,
Montreal through maple syrup, Turkey through Turkish coffee, the
American south through Luzianne ice tea, Spain through a tincture of
saffron, Mexico through tequila, and Ecuador through fruit juices.
Among others.

In 2006, Mr. Belefant was named Photographer of the Year by the
International Color Awards for his body of work.
