Andrea Shine's childhood was spent traveling the length and breadth of Europe with her family, a motley band of tinkers. A shy child, she delighted in drawing and painting. By the age of twelve, her work was being published and the family lived somewhere in the United States. She learned to speak English while continuing her painstaking translations of obscure Tibetan manuscripts and being tutored by renowned illustrators and artists. Andrea's prolific artistic creativity of that time became known as her "Turbulent Adolescent Period".
Andrea has been a professional portrait artist for 30 years and has illustrated many children's books, including The Summer My Father Was Ten, recipient of the CHRISTOPHER AWARD. Other recent awards include American Bookseller Pick Of The List, CTW Sesame Street Parents' Magazine Reviewers Choice Book, The Paterson Prize For Children's Literature, IRA-CBC Teachers Choice Award, and the NAPPA Honors Award. Her illustrations have been acclaimed by Publishers Weekly, Booklist (Starred Review), Kirkus (Pointer Review), School Library Journal, and Horn Book Guide (Recommended Title). The artist's work has been exhibited at the Dag Hammerskjold Center at The United Nations, New York City, NY; Vanderbilt Museum, Centerport, NY; Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts Center, Athens, OH; Newark Museum, Newark, NJ; Elaine Benson Gallery, Bridgehampton, NY; Gallery East, East Hampton, NY; Arlene Bujese Gallery, East Hampton, NY; Goodman Gallery, Southampton, NY, among a jillion others.
Her work hangs in collections around the world.
Andrea lives near a windy beach where she walks with her dog, an Australian heeler who politely refuses media requests to divulge details about his carefree formative years. Together, they decipher cloud pictures and debate color theory.
